Puma Softball has had a rough start to the 2020 season, going 2-12 in their first 14 games of the season. The Pumas are 1-9 against their Division I opponents and 1-3 against Division II opponents.
The Pumas two victories on the season have come in dramatic fashion, earning both wins on walk-offs. Here is a recap of those two victories.
February 8 (game 1) | PV 10, Eastern Arizona 9
Emily White’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh seized the victory for the Pumas over the Eastern Arizona. With the game tied at nine in the bottom of the seventh, White singled on a 1-2 count scoring Elysa Rochin to defeat the EAC.
The Pumas collected 13 hits on the day, including four home runs by Thalia Higuera, Hailey Galvez, Neeley Bell, and Emily Cowan. White and Galvez each had three hits on the day to lead the Pumas.
Maite Bustillos got the start for the Pumas, going five and a third innings. She allowed seven runs on seven hits and struck out four.
February 25 (game 1) | PV 3, South Mountain 2
Hailey Galvez’s walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth secured the Puma victory over South Mountain.
The Pumas were down 2-1 entering the bottom of the eighth when smart hitting, base running, and a little bit of luck helped them defeat the Cougars. The Pumas were able to tie the game after an error by the Cougars' center fielder, Hailey Galvez came to the plate with a runner on first and two outs. Galvez singled on a 2-0 pitch to center, scoring Meghan Viramontes from first and seizing the victory for the Pumas.
The Pumas had four hits on the day, two by Galvez.
Maite Bustillos got the start and win for the Pumas. She went all eight innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out six.
The Pumas are back in action on Tuesday, March 3 when they take on Chandler-Gilbert at home. First pitch is at 1pm.
